Koja takes part in world class research
Koja’s R&D Engineer and PhD Student Turo Välikangas in collaboration with the Department of Energy Technology at Aalborg University has written an article which will be published in the International Journal of Heat & Mass Transfer.
oja’s R&D Engineer and PhD Student Turo Välikangas is studying at the Doctoral School of Industry Innovations (DSII) at Tampere University of Technology under the supervision of Professor Miikka Dal Maso. During the spring 2017 he did a research visit at the Department of Energy Technology at Aalborg University, Denmark. The results of this collaboration will be published in the International Journal of Heat & Mass Transfer in March 2018. This journal is graded as one of the leading publications in the field of heat and mass transfer. The article can be found at Elsevier ScienceDirect website for free until the end of January 2018.
In the article, Välikangas and the research group in Aalborg have investigated the effect of using vortex generators in the herringbone fin design:
”The original idea to the article was developed when I was interviewing Bengt Sunden from the Lund University in Sweden. We had a discussion about an article that Sunden's research group had published. In that article, they studied the effect of the shape of the vortex generators to the thermal-hydraulic performance of the fin-and-tube heat exchanger. We decided with the group in Aalborg that we will utilize this information and locate the best performing vortex generator in the fin so that it would be easier to manufacture without compromising the performance of the fin.”

This is the second publication from Välikangas that will be added to his PhD Thesis titled ”Fin-and-tube heat exchanger development with both numerical and experimental means”. The results from his project will be utilised in Koja’s research and development in the future. Also, this design as well as many others will be measured and tested in Koja’s new R&D center in Tampere, Finland.
